August 26 International Play Music on the Porch Day
One of three groups performing on the driveway of one of our mates. The porch was too small to hold us all. The Jacks were the singalong portion, fit between baroque recorder ensembles and early music performances. A couple of the Jacks were part of those groups, too!
July 9 Gabriola Island Cultivate Festival
We were part of a shanty stage session in honour of the late Bob Wyche, led by Islander Bob Bossin and joined by our friends and inspirations Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat.
May 26 White Rock Volunteer Appreciation Lunch
By special request, we transformed ourselves into a pirate crew to fit into the afternoon’s theme – the decorations in the room really set the tone.

August 6 Hollyburn Sailing Club and Open House
A return engagement to a waterfront venue. We shared the bill with a rock’n’roll ukelele band wearing matching Hawaiian shirts.

Sunday, January 26 at the Tipper Restaurant 7 pm- 9 pm
Wow! We pulled in about 40 shanty fans and singers and easily filled two hours with traditional shanties, modern shanties, some humorous songs, and a moving recitation of a Les Barker poem, “Disaster at Sea” for our third (?) annual Open Shanty Session at the Tipper restaurant. By the end of the evening, we’d heard songs in English, French, German, and … a Balkan language I need to ask the singer to identify. We’d added in bodhran, penny whistle, concertina, and button accordion, as well as seen the debut of our limber jack dancing doll.
It’s a great room for singing, but not for photographs, so we have no visual evidence. But there may be some audio files at a later date.
Regular sessions at Old Hastings Mill Store Museum
Sunday afternoon open shanty sessions. 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
1575 Alma Street at Point Grey Road, Vancouver
Admission by donation to the Museum.
Join us for an hour of shanties and sea songs, and take your turn to lead one from the audience or the front of the room.
Bonus. After the shanties and a short break, head upstairs to listen to or join the “fiddle session,” (included guitars, fiddles, concertinas, etc.) featuring old-time tunes and music from Irish, Scottish, Appalachian, Quebecois (and elsewhere) traditions, led by Doug Sherlock, sometimes shanty singer and always an enthusiastic fiddler.
